During the 17th century, the world of the native Americans, which I prefer to call the First People, was ripped apart by the advance of the newcomers that migrated from Europe. As a matter of convenience, the whites made treaties, yet at every turn, none were kept. Some of the First People fought this invasion, some welcomed the newcomers and befriended them, but all saw that nothing of their culture and society would remain the same. In this painting, a solitary individual and his mount display a posture that senses the impact of this change. The colors are muted and the sky is tumultuous. The wind is bringing change.
