The time period of this piece is 1850 – 1870. A Lakota (Sioux) warrior raises his lance to summon the others in his party. He is mounted on a roan Appaloosa. He controls his horse with a snaffle bit, which is the oldest known, is still used today, and dates back to the Pazyryk culture of southern Siberia (2,600 BC). His headdress is not a chief’s bonnet or a society bonnet but is a war bonnet and provides him personal protection.
