During the fur trade era the Blackfeet Indians were staunch and fearsome enemies of the white man, while other tribes welcomed their presence and traded with them freely.  Often the Mountain Men would acquire an Indian wife.  A trapper traveling with an Indian wife enjoyed a more comfortable life than those who worked alone.  She tended the lodge, cooked the meals, made and mended clothing and provided the social conduit to her tribe.  She in turn, acquired goods such as metal cookware, cloth and jewelry.  Usually, whatever she wanted, she got.
